Port Newark Construction Progresses

This week, I made a post-holiday visit to the Seamen’s Church Institute’s (SCI) Port Newark International Seafarers' Center construction site to review progress on our major renovation.
Despite near-zero wind chill factors, tradesmen were installing windows to the new Malcom McLean Memorial Entrance while HVAC crews installed ducts throughout the interior of the non-heated facility. The air was crisp, but spirits were high as workers swapped cold-weather stories while we shared an impromptu hotdog and chili lunch.
Within days, the exterior will be fully enclosed, allowing portable heaters and continued HVAC, plumbing and electrical work, the major works for the coming weeks. Before too long, we will open portions of the building. Although betting on construction dates can be hazardous, we feel confident that we will reopen the major Phase I section by May or June, with the remaining Phase II work completed by early autumn. Then we'll throw a dedication party for all to celebrate.
When complete, the second floor will house the main Internet lounge, recreation area, chapel, chaplains’ work station, and welcome center that allows seafarers to wire money home to loved ones. The first floor (Phase II) includes food service area, a large meeting room, and new fitness center. The third floor, a mezzanine overlooking the second floor, houses staff offices and part of our Center for Seafarers Rights division. As before, a large recreational field and basketball court provide exercise and the only green space in the entire Port. We believe it will be one of the most beautiful and comprehensive seafarers’ hospitality centers in the world.
Because we believe so highly in the International Center's mission, we push ahead with construction in spite of uniquely challenging economic times. For major gifts and naming opportunities, please email me or call 212-349-9090.
Meanwhile, our hospitality ministry continues in a temporary space within the structure. Every day, our receptionist greets each seafarer, port worker, and trucker entering the space while chaplains visit ships and van drivers transport seafarers around the port and to nearby shopping. Because of your generosity and support, our mission continues with faith and vigor.
Enjoy the photos I shot on a very brisk day.
