VOLUNTEER SHIP VISITOR
Reports to the Chaplain on duty.
Description: Assists SCI chaplains during ship visits, including:

  • Accompanying chaplain onboard ships docked in the Greater Port of New York and New Jersey, primarily those in Port Newark and Port Elizabeth
  • Welcoming seafarers to Port of Greater New York and New Jersey
  • Distributing reading material and/or other gifts to seafarers
  • Assisting seafarers who are not eligible for shore leave to use SCI cell phones to assure family that they have arrived in port safely
  • Referring seafarers who have any concerns to the chaplain on duty
Requirements: Volunteers must be:

  • Able to climb several flights of stairs easily
  • Friendly and open to meeting new people, whatever their culture or circumstance
  • Flexible regarding expectations (ready for an adventure)
Note: Volunteers do not need to be fluent in a language other than English

Hours: SCI chaplains invest substantial time in training volunteer ship visitors. Because of that investment, the ideal volunteer candidate is willing and able to commit to at least one ship visiting session a month, and more often if possible.
