HISTORY
When
the commercial maritime forces of 1840s met the Episcopal Church, the Seamen’s
Church Institute was created. The exciting early times in the evolution of the
Institute give a glimpse of an era during which commerce with weak civil rights
laws often resulted in the exploitation of workers, especially seafarers. When
a religious revival met the birth of modern globalization, the Episcopal Church
was there to be a visible presence in a harbor that was too often characterized
by greed.
The
strong foundations of faith and witness that brought the mission into being are
still found in today’s Seamen’s Church Institute. The Institute and its staff
witness to God’s loving presence and justice through its pastoral care of
seafarers and U.S.
river mariners, professional training that enhances safety and protects the
environment, and advocacy that brings legal aid to seafarers throughout the
world. We are able to continue our ministry through your financial support and
prayers.
